Mini-Vacation on Maio, Cabo Verde, Africa
From Santiago to one of the other 10 islands in the archipelago
Cynthia and I, along with our friends Nolene & Randy, took a much-needed weekend vacation to the Cabo Verdean island of Maio. By ferry. Here’s a capsulized view of our Friday-to-Sunday getaway.
Waiting for the ferry that was supposed to set sail at 6:00pm but didn’t move until 9:30pm. Wait; are those mattresses and shopping carts? Yes. Some folks work in Santiago and go home for the weekend by boat to Maio (where there are next to no jobs).
It’s 1:00am and we are looking for a place to eat. Yes, we found one that figured that the boat was delayed and might have some vacationers on it.
When I woke up, this is what I saw on a cool Saturday morning. Boats and fishermen yakking away. Time for that dawn walk.
First; take the ‘tourist pic’ of the cross. I noticed a church in the background. That has to be the direction towards where the people live.
This mural was prominent on the quiet road to the church. I don’t know who this person is as I had no one to ask at 7:00am.
The church; backlit by the rising sun. Facing west towards the cross and the Continent. The spirit and significance warmed my spirit and soul.
Sistas in fellowship under the umbrella by the ocean chillin’. Holla!
I had to get a B & W photograph in; shout-out to the children in one of the villages on our tour of the island.
The ‘Rock Steady’ crew! Cynthia, Nolene, Randy, and Moi. We had a blast on Maio. We’ll do it again when we have more time!
Next time we’ll do it by plane. Up n’ Down in 10 minutes as opposed to hours by ferry. Word.
I hope you enjoyed this brief travelogue. This is the first time for me documenting our experience by smartphone. I left my DSLR home on purpose. I wanted to test out the Samsung A52 and see what it can do. The photos (10 for brevity) here only had minor tweaking. Cropping and a little exposure adjustment. I fiddled less than a minute on all of the pics. Tell me what you think in the comments. Love to you all!

Nice to see that you have found your true home. . . Wish we could visit you all and see the Motherland. I am still doing the family research and trying to get my children interested in taking it over but no takers. Just love the pictures you have been sharing and gland for your friendship. Keep us posted as there is nothing here in the USA to write about. Love and miss you and Cynthia, stay safe.
Do I remember right that you live on Praia? If so what side and climate? For whatever reason, even though I knew Cape Verde Islands were Islands, I had not grasped really that you were Island Dwellers now.
