Just like the American Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the American Civil War, Social Media has not freed us. Modern day Settler Masters control the internet. They let us signup for free in exchange for ownership of our content. 

We can till the internet, but the crop - our content - goes towards paying for that access to the ‘new land’. Our content is the new ‘cotton’ from which the Settler Masters can accumulate more wealth without sharing that wealth with us; the content creators.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and YouTube are but a few of the Settler Masters’ platforms. Is the internet stolen land? What is the alternative to Digital sharecropping? Is it really free to signup?

Recently I have had so many friends hacked and put in Twitter and Facebook jail.
These are honest, articulate, thoughtfully opinionated Sisters and Brothers from many cultures throughout the Diaspora. Ironically, they have taken lashes for their content like our Brother in this 19th century photograph.

Tell Me Something Good!

Let this be the first day of your digital media life. Make it a social media re-boot if you will. The new ‘Keep Your Eyes on the Digital Prize’ is ownership of your content! 
You may have to invest, buy or rent the technology and platforms, in order to own your content. 

Communicate directly and honestly with your audience. 

What you write (blog) or say (podcast) belongs to you!

Own it. Be responsible for it. Just don’t sharecrop it!
