"Without Our Participation, a Community is Just a Neighborhood."

A community is the confluence of people, ideas, activities, the spirituality, nurturing, and sharing that identifies the group. The neighborhood is just geography. Said another way; you can live in a neighborhood and NOT be in any of its communities. Yes, a neighborhood can have more than one community.

A community is also defined by its participants. Its governance comes from the collected and collective visions of its members. Individuals make decisions to be a part of a community or not. A community has a ‘we’ component. It is made up of like-minded, supportive people typically centered around agreed upon visions and goals.

Communities, in general, are open and welcoming with a mantra of ‘get in where you fit in’ (or keep it moving!). Often, you see the people doing things for the good of the community; or being in service to the community.

The communities I join and participate in engage in the philosophy of UBUNTU. Ubuntu is a Nguni Bantu term meaning "humanity". It is sometimes translated as "I am because we are", "I am because you are", or "humanity towards others". The African Journal of Social Work (AJSW) defines Ubuntu in part as; “... an authentic individual human being is part of a larger and more significant relational, communal, societal, environmental and spiritual world.
